Marble Living Room Floor in Cherry Hills Village
About This Project
This living room floor was installed in a Cherry Hills Village home as part of a main floor renovation. The tile is a 24x48 polished porcelain in a Calacatta marble pattern — a large-format tile that creates the continuous stone surface look with fewer grout lines than smaller tile formats. The grout joint is 1/16 inch with a light gray grout that blends with the tile's veining rather than creating a visible grid.
Large-format polished tile requires particular attention to lippage — the difference in height between adjacent tile edges. Even 1/32-inch lippage is visible and tangible on a polished surface. We used a medium-bed mortar with large-format tile clips and leveling wedges during setting to hold each tile in plane with its neighbors while the mortar cured. The subfloor was assessed and self-leveled before any tile was set.
What We Did
- Applied self-leveling compound over the concrete subfloor to achieve flatness within 1/8-inch over 10 feet
- Dry-laid 24x48 tiles from the room center to plan the layout and minimize narrow cuts at walls
- Set tile with medium-bed mortar using large-format tile leveling clips and wedges at every joint
- Grouted with light gray unsanded grout at 1/16-inch joints; cleaned and sealed after full cure
